The BuckMaster: 40 Years Later

By Buck Knives

The legendary BuckMaster Model 184 took the knife world by storm in the 1980s. Built as a mission-critical tool for military use, the original BuckMaster found a following among those in and out of uniform. Buck Knives delivered 2,500 BuckMasters to the world-renowned U.S. Navy SEALs in 1985. Consequently, the original BuckMaster Model 184, having undergone rigorous field testing by U.S. Navy SEALs, U.S. Army Special Forces, and various other special operations personnel, emerged as a pivotal design that led to the development of the venerable M9 Multi-Purpose Bayonet System, a tool that earned official adoption by the U.S. Army in 1987.

For 2024, Buck Knives proudly presents the long-awaited 084 BuckMaster 2.0 Combat Diver Pro. It is built to exacting standards with the direct input of current and former service members, including retired U.S. Navy SEAL Commander D.T. Coulter. Commander Coulter’s 55-year journey for the perfect dive knife led to the creation of the Buckmaster 2.0. This next-generation BuckMaster is built to meet the exacting challenges of today’s military. Buck Knives will allocate 1,000 084 BuckMaster 2.0 Combat Diver Pros to its 2024 Legacy Collection, allowing civilians the opportunity to own and collect a special knife with combat DNA.

The original Buckmaster Model 184 had two detachable anchors that could secure maritime equipment in coral or sand for a load capacity of 250 lbs. Likewise, the BuckMaster 2.0 has an anchor system called the Emergency Anchor Wing (EAW). Unlike the two-piece detachable pin system of the original Buckmaster, the EAW has a distinctive one-piece wing shape that is reversible and ambidextrous. The Buckmaster 2.0 has a strong spear point blade suited for diver-specific duties such as prying and digging. Infused with Commander Coulter’s field-based design intent and a specially formulated Paul Bos heat treatment developed by Paul himself, this knife stands ready no matter the application.

This year, the history of the BuckMaster perseveres with the introduction of the ultimate diving knife, the new 084 BuckMaster 2.0 Combat Diver Pro.

History of the Northwest – Edward Pulaski and the Great Fire of 1910

“We reached the mine just in time, for we were hardly in when the fire swept over our trail. I ordered the men to lie face down upon the ground of the tunnel and not dare to sit up unless they wanted to suffocate, for the tunnel was filling with fire gas and smoke. One man tried to make a rush outside, which would have meant certain death. I drew my revolver and said, ‘The next man who tries to leave the tunnel I will shoot.’ ”- Edward Pulaski
